IMMOLATION – DESCENT

Few bands in death metal command the same level of respect as IMMOLATION, and with "Descent", the New York veterans once again reaffirm their long legacy. Now 37 years into their career, the band returns with their twelfth studio album, delivering a crushing blend of darkness, intensity, and unrelenting precision. In 2026, IMMOLATION showed no signs of slowing down, pairing major tour activity with the arrival of new material. Nearly four years after "Acts of God", "Descent" is set for release on April 10 via Nuclear Blast Records, with the band operating at full strength and clearly confident in the impact of their latest work. With that in mind, we descend into "Descent" to uncover how this latest chapter reinforces IMMOLATION’S mark on death metal.

One thing IMMOLATION has always guaranteed is consistency, and the new full-length is no exception. From the very first strike of opener 'These Vengeful Winds', the band hits with unrelenting, malevolent force. Ross Dolan remains a commanding presence, his voice sounding as possessed as ever, to be honest, surely has only deepened its menace and authority. At the core of Immolation’s overwhelming presence lies Bob Vigna’s distinctive lead work, where dissonant lines, twisted bends, and searing harmonics slice cleanly through the density of the sound. It’s a style that amplifies the band’s trademark tension and unease. Driving it all forward, Steve Shalaty delivers a precise and punishing performance, his drumming both relentless and sharply defined. Together, they form a unit that feels tightly controlled yet brutally effective—seasoned, focused, and as crushing as ever.'God’s Last Breath', emerges as one of the album’s most imposing and malevolent tracks, steeped in a dark, oppressive atmosphere. The band thrive on pulling the listener into their world of unholy intensity, guiding them deeper into a suffocating abyss with each crushing riff. The song unfolds at a deliberate, dragging pace, allowing the low-end to resonate with crushing weight while the tension steadily builds. As the track unfolds, bursts of speed tear through the dense atmosphere, injecting contrast and intensifying its overall impact. The snare’s slightly triggered character becomes more apparent in these faster passages, though it hardly detracts from the track’s crushing force. Echoing the suffocating atmosphere of earlier releases, the lead work towards the end twists into something truly unholy, sealing the track with a haunting final statement.

The first released single before the album, 'Adversary', again shows Immolation’s ability to create songs that are both aggressive but also immediately engaging. It opens in a surge of aggression—fast, chaotic, and elevated by some of Vigna’s most vivid lead work on the record. Just under a minute in, the track shifts into a rolling melodic groove, driven by a piercing, overtone-rich riff and Dolan’s forceful play, invoking apocalyptic imagery with chilling conviction. Building on its earlier momentum, the song pushes forward with unrelenting need, settling into a crushing groove before ramping up to full intensity. When Dolan darkly growls "We are the adversary", it lands with absolute authority and power, giving the track a commanding, almost ritualistic weight that stays. From the first melodies, the next single 'Host', turns out to be a massive drum powerhouse, highlighting what Steve Shalaty’s is able to do. The track kicks off with a punishing, tribal tom-tom groove, its warm, organic tone resonating with every strike-so natural that any triggered elements are barely noticeable. This rhythm soon flows into mid-tempo double bass, driving the heavy riffs with relentless precision. With Ross Dolan’s precise, shadowed vocal delivery cutting through the chaos, 'Host' becomes a relentlessly devastating and unforgettable track. The album closes with the title track, 'Descent', and there’s no time to catch your breath. From the very first note, relentless blast beats and fast, staccato riffs slam into the listener, demanding full attention. The composition balances melodic elements with a driving groove that will keep your neck in constant motion. Dolan’s dark, menacing vocals intertwine seamlessly with the instruments, forging a cohesive, crushing sound wall. It’s a fittingly brutal finale, leaving a lasting impression long after the last note fades.

Descent is a relentless display of Immolation’s enduring power, blending crushing riffs, unyielding drumming, and Dolan’s shadowed vocals into a commanding, cohesive force. It’s a devastating, masterfully executed record that proves the band remains at the pinnacle of death metal.
