MULTIWOMB – ANATOMY OF GORELUST

Arising from Indonesia, grinding death metal trio MULTIWOMB have spawned their debut album Anatomy of Gorelust on Grave Island Records. From a region best known as an endless breeding ground of superb underground extreme metal and supported by an ever-burgeoning scene, the band finds its identity on this surgical inauguration by its members, Gus Donald (vocals), Bintang (guitar & bass), and Rama (drums).

This album kicks off at a punishing pace and doesn't give the listener much quarter to process the aural slaughter that lays ahead over the next nine procedures forced into 26 minutes. From the opening song, I’m instantly reminded of that classic death metal era (circa 1989-95) when the genre was evolving and extreme metal was entering staggering levels of heaviness, precision and brutality, while notably infused with helpings of early 2000’s death-grind shining through.

‍

The engine room here cranks out an intensely high tempo with metronomic blasting being as urgent as it is crushing. With endless riffage, and the crunching but not overly distorted guitars, the tones are well balanced with moments of angular dissonance and a sharp dispatch. Matched with hyper-driven drums, the bpm work rate is tight, blistering, and with enough double-kick action to power a factory for a week while the deep rumbling bass gallops alongside in a furious sonic rage. Highlighted by crusty thoracic growls, the vocals harbour a sociopathic assertiveness that accentuate the anatomical themes implying a dark undertone burning with a malicious intent.

‍

Overall, the production seems quite polished and not detracting from the band’s rawness or delivery while still retaining a fierce and frenetic experience. For repetitive blows, I found myself returning to Womb Dissection and Placenta Cannibal Feast with their eviscerating frenzy, while Enema of Boiling Gore brings the momentum down a gear into a mildly slower quasi-industrial approach. The final offering, Impaled with Lust, is the standout track that is executed with all the band's elements fusing seamlessly in a vicious barbarism.

‍

A salubrious discourse with influences reminiscent of Suffocation, early Cannibal Corpse, Misery Index, and regional luminaries Siksakubur and Jasad. Anatomy of Gorelust isn’t a nostalgia trip but more of an invitation to explore unforgiving environments of intrigue and gore. An exercise in pathology and aggression.

SCORE 8.5/10
